School Workshops
Global Steps
Arts Orillia is building a teachers’ tool box for inclusive dance education with a global focus. Teachers are offered a package that gives information about a particular style of dance, including its cultural history and social context. A guest artist and expert in the field of dance will give a 50 minute in-school dance workshop. The level of physical challenge will be adjusted for the grade level. We ask that teachers let us know about the accessibility requirements of students and staff prior to our in-person workshop. Teachers are supported with a follow up assignment and rubric. In 2024 our workshops have a grade 1 through 8 focus and include Street Dance in February for grades 7 & 8, Bharatanatyam classical Indian dance in May for grades 4, 5 & 6, and Traditional Jingle Dance demonstration in June for grades 1, 2 , & 3. For information about how to bring this experience to your classroom, please contact Artistic Director, Kate Hilliard.
Inventing Utopia
What if we could imagine a better world? What does it look like? What does it take to get there? Ask your students about the world they want to live in and invite them to explore their creativity, and imagination through games, writing, improv, and more as they create a personal manifesto. We’re celebrating new ideas, and above all else – we’re creating an inclusive place for students to be honest about the issues that they would like to tackle in their communities. This is a creative workshop that trains leadership. In 2023, our workshops are for grade 9 & 10 English students and will take place in November with Anishinaabe Algonquin author, speaker and educator S.P. Joseph Lyons for grade 9 & 10. In May workshops are facilitated by Forum Theatre Director, Simon Malbogat for grade 11 & 12 Drama students. Water Monument
Water Monument is an interactive eco-art experience for young environmentalists and student artists! This workshop begins by discussing water care through a variety of cultural perspectives. Participants will engage in a community assemblage project where they are encouraged to design, discuss, and imagine a better future together. This experience places a strong focus on collaboration, mindfulness, and empathic listening as students take responsibility to protect our earth for future generations! In 2024, our workshops have a grade 7 and 8 focus and use the creative practice of photography and sculpture. Bookings are available in January and February 2024. For information about how to bring this experience to your classroom, please contact Artistic Director, Kate Hilliard.
